2011 – GSUSA Skill Based Badges

2011 release had 3 sets of 5 additional skill base badges (15 total additional badges) for all levels except Daisy and Ambassador. Each set was associated with one of the 3 traditional Journeys but could be earned on their own without doing the Journey.

This was highly confusing to leaders as it appeared to many you needed to earn the 5 skill based badges as well in order to do the chosen journey. Even GSUSA’s Award Log showed the 5 skill based badges with the journeys, adding to the confusion. These were actually optional and later GSUSA changed their Award Logs to show a skill based badge section and a journey section. Now, the Award Logs categorize the skill based badges into STEM, Outdoors, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship. GSUSA stopped making the 5 badge set booklets in 2023 and started printing and selling them as individual booklets like the other badges.

Additional badges have been released yearly from 2015 to current date. Daisies got their first flower shaped badges in 2017 with additional Daisy badges released yearly to current date.

In 2021, GSUSA started retiring badges. The Cookie Business badges and leaves were retired first and new ones released. In 2022, the Financial Literacy badges and leaves were retired and new ones released. In 2023, some of the art badges in Brownie and Junior levels were retired and new art badges for Daisy, Brownie, and Junior level were released. In 2024, the red cross images on any badge was retired and new images released – with some of the first aid badges also having altered requirements.

All retired badges can still be earned, just like any retired badges from before 2011 – but finding them can be difficult as GSUSA no longer makes them and only sold them until current stock ran out.
