At Home – Step 2 of 4
Part A – Shelter in Place
Part B – Shelter away from home (Daisies stop here)- Build Shelters (Brownies stop here)
First, Read the Information You Need:
If you can’t find a shelter, you need to make one. Now this could be simple putting up a tent, but what if you don’t have a tent available?
Did you know you can make a shelter from a single large black garbage bag? To learn about garbage bag shelters, watch this video on YouTube.
The double half hitch knot (also called a two-half hitch knot) mentioned in the video is needed. If you don’t know how to make that knot, you can find instructions, here.
Besides the A-Frame type of shelter shown in the Garbage Bag video, there are other ways to build a shelter from a bag, poncho, or tarp. You can use a blanket for practice at home as well, but when you need it for real, you need plastic, or a fabric that repels moisture like a poncho or tarp. Even when it doesn’t rain, morning dew can soak through non-moisture repelling fabric, causing mold issues if used for several days.
Practical Survivor has several methods you can use to build a shelter, with lots of pictures. Check them out. Does any of them look easy to build?
Second, Choose an Option:
Option 1: Build 2 Shelters | Option 2: Shelter Overnight |
Use the Garbage Bag Shelter Video and the Practical Survivor website to figure out what shelters you can make using what you have at home. Remember that yarn can work as your line for this experiment, and a blanket could be used in place of a tarp. If your family owns a tent, that can be one of the two shelters you can set up. Build both shelters and decide which one was easier to make. | Use the Garbage Bag Shelter Video and the Practical Survivor website to figure out what shelters you can make using what you have at home. Or you can use a family tent. Remember that yarn can work as your line for this experiment, and a blanket could be used in place of a tarp for one night. Build one shelter and then stay in it overnight. |
