Activity Description: Scouts plan a space-themed meeting party they could host at the next meeting to celebrate and complete the badges in all levels.
- Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Brownie Space Science Adventurer and Junior Space Science Investigator badge requirements.
Info Needed: A space party is a fun way to wrap up a learning project and share discoveries with others. Scouts can show what they made, talk about what they learned, and enjoy space-themed games or treats. Looking at the stars together helps scouts connect their learning to the real night sky.
Items Needed:
- Paper and pencils or markers
Before This Activity:
This activity was designed for the D/B/J/C – Space Science & Citizen Scientist Combo. Before this activity starts, the troop should already have done:
- Go over How do Scientists Classify Stars? (Fulfills Step 3 of GSUSA Cadette Space Science Researcher.)
- Do one Tool Based Activity to see stars (Fulfills Step 3 of GSUSA Daisy Space Science Explorer, Step 2 of GSUSA Brownie Space Science Adventurer, Step 4 of GSUSA Junior Space Science Investigator, and Step 4 of GSUSA Cadette Space Science Researcher.) This is not double dipping if you are doing multiple SciStarter Projects.)
- Do a Light Pollution Quick Dive. (Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Cadette Space Science Researcher.)
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15 min):
- Review what scouts have done so far (3–4 min)
- We’ve fulfilled one step of everyone’s badges. We still need two more Daisy and four more Brownie/Junior/Cadette.
- Brainstorm party ideas (5–10 min)
- Cadettes need to learn about visible and invisible light, so start off with the Visible and Invisible Light Quick Combo. Plan for around 30 minutes for the start of the meeting and this activity. Cadette will be earned with this final piece.
- Look at the options and see what other activities are interesting.
- Daisies and Juniors need a Sun based activity that hits both requirements. Currently only the Earth Year Dance fits both.
- Daisies and Brownies need a Moon based activity. Moon Oreo Phases activity is usually a favorite, but needs to be scheduled for the final activity for the party meeting.
- Brownies and Juniors need a Star based activity. If running short on time, Dot-to-Dot Constellation Printables is the simplest activity that is still fun.
- Choose what to include (3–4 min)
- Scouts vote or agree on a few things to include in the party.
- Make sure the plan helps finish any remaining badge steps and will fit in the time allowed.
- Write or draw the plan (2–3 min)
- Write down the final outline for the next meeting party.
