  4. Weather Alert

First, Read the Information You Need:

Weather Alerts are important. Many disasters that cause emergency situations come from weather.

  • Tornadoes
  • Hurricanes
  • Blizzards
  • Floods
  • Severe Thunderstorms
  • Extreme Heat
  • Extreme Cold

The National Weather Service (NWS), run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), maintains a system to alert Americans when there is severe weather or weather disasters in their area.

Second, Chose One Option to Complete:

Option 1:Cover the BasicsOption 2:Weather Radio
Most Americans will register on the NWS website so their cell phone or email will receive alerts and updates. Do your parents have it set up for them to get alerts? If they don’t ask if they would be willing to sign up on the NOAA website.

You can also check it online manually for any alerts. Find your state in the list on the NWS website and see if there are any recent weather alerts. Now, go back to the NWS website with the list of states. Instead of clicking on your state, click on the County List.

Find out where your county is and see if there are any alerts currently in your county.

– Did your state have any alerts on the website?
– Did your county have any alerts on the website?
– Are your parents registered to receive alerts on their cell phones or email?
Because power, internet, and cell phone reception can often go down during severe weather, it is recommended that you have a Weather Radio. These are radios specifically for listening to weather warnings. Many companies have them.

Families in frequent areas with severe weather will keep them too. Those that go outdoors a lot and camping will often bring one.

Read about how to use a NOAA Weather Radio.

You are can skip a lot of pages when they do step by step instructions. Just make sure you can find the answer to these three questions:

1 – What alerts not associated with weather will it give?
2 – What is a SAME Code and how many digits of the 5 digit number are the same for any area of the same State?
3 – How much do they cost?

Congrats! You’ve earned the Communication Rocker!
