Our Summary* of Requirements:

NOTE: On a flat, easy trail with minimal stops, a troop can cover 4 to 6 miles in 3 hours. On a trail with elevation changes, rocks, or frequent stops, expect to cover closer to 3 miles. If unsure of time required, hike out on a trail for 1.5 hours, then turn around and hike back regardless of the distance. Short breaks every 30-60 minutes for water, snacks, and rest count towards the three hours required.

  1. Plan to go on 3 different types of hikes, each hike taking 3 hours or covering 3-4 miles.
  2. Pick the place you will take your three hikes AND what budget you need.
  3. Make a gear list for your hike after researching what you need.
  4. Practice by trying hiking, talking to a coach/expert, OR doing visualization exercises.
  5. Do the three hikes AND have fun while doing so (shoot an action video, play a game, OR keep an adventure journal).

* – This summary is based off the GSUSA booklet activity choices.
