Items Needed

  • One cardboard roll per scout (toilet paper or paper towel roll)
  • Yarn
  • Two pipe cleaners
  • Felt, foam, or construction paper (for wings)
  • Wiggle eyes
  • Hole punch
  • Clear tape
  • Scissors
  • Glue (school glue or hot glue with adult supervision)

Instructions (Total Time: 25–30 minutes)

  1. Add Legs with Pipe Cleaners (5–7 minutes)
    • Use the hole punch to make four holes near the bottom of the roll
    • Slide one pipe cleaner through two holes across from each other
    • Twist the ends around the roll and back through a hole to hold in place
    • Repeat for the other pipe cleaner so the bug has four legs on each side
  2. Wrap the Bug with Yarn (8–10 minutes)
    • Cut a small slit at one end of the roll
    • Tuck one end of the yarn into the slit
    • Wrap the yarn around the roll until it’s mostly covered
    • Tuck the end of the yarn into the slit or tape it down inside
  3. Add Wings and Eyes (7–8 minutes)
    • Cut a circle out of felt, foam, or paper
    • Cut the circle in half to make two wings
    • Glue the wings to the top of the roll
    • Glue two wiggle eyes on the front to finish your bug
