Transition Time

Activity Description: Scouts use emojis or simple shapes to sketch a four-panel comic using different types of panel transitions.

Info Needed: A sample comic should fit into four panels and use facial expressions or body posture to show what’s happening. Each panel should move the story forward, even without words. You can focus on how characters feel, move, or react.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20 min):

  1. Review the Panel-to-panel Transitions sheet together. (5 min)
    • Scouts look at examples of different transition types.
    • Leader points out how each type changes the way the story moves.
  2. Choose one story concept to use for all comics. (2 min)
    • Use a simple idea like “Getting ready for school” or “Trying a new food.”
  3. Create one comic strip using emojis or shapes with a chosen transition. (8 min)
    • (Optional) Break scouts into small groups, each group working on a single 4 panel concept.
    • Scouts sketch four panels using one transition type from the sheet.
    • Focus on sequence and meaning, not detailed art.
  4. Sketch a second comic strip using a different transition. (5 min)
    • Scouts use the same story concept but change the transition type.
    • (Optional) Scouts can share their strips with the group.
