Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Cadette Cybersecurity Basics badge requirements.
Info Needed for badge requirements: Some offers, like prizes or big discounts, might seem exciting at first, but they can be tricks from scammers. Scouts should think about whether they’ve seen similar offers before and learn to spot scams by looking for clues like urgent messages or asking for personal information. Remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Always check if an offer or organization is real before clicking or sharing anything.
Items Needed
- Pre-cut VTK Scam Cards from GSUSA (one complete set with all 8 cards)
Instructions
- Create an imaginary line in the room. One end represents “Very interested,” and the other end represents “Not at all interested.”
- Scouts will hear about some amazing offers and decide how interesting they seem.
- When the card is read, only read each headline (e.g., “Poetry Contest! Win up to $5000!”) aloud at first. Scouts move to their chosen position on the line.
- Once they’ve chosen their spot, read the Scam Card that explains how the scam works for that headline.
- After hearing the scam details, scouts can adjust their position on the line to show how interested they are now.
- Go through all 8 headlines and Scam Cards, following the same process.
