Simple Paper Bug

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Bugs badge requirements.

Items Needed:

  • One sheet of plain paper (any color)
  • Scissors
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils

Instructions (Total Time: 10–15 minutes)

  1. Fold the Paper (3–4 minutes)
    • Fold the paper in half lengthwise
    • Cut along the fold to make two strips for bug body and wings
  2. Create the Bug Body (3–4 minutes)
    • Take one strip and fold it accordion-style (zig-zag fold) to make a bumpy body
    • Draw legs, eyes, antennae, and a face on either end
  3. Add Wings (4–5 minutes)
    • Use the second strip to cut out simple wing shapes (two large oval shapes or one butterfly-style shape)
    • Decorate with bright patterns, spots, or stripes
    • Slide the wings between folds of the bug body, no glue needed if tucked tightly
  4. Extra Ideas (Optional)
    • Add a name and bug type: Is it a beetle, butterfly, or something imaginary?
    • Fold a tiny scrap of paper into feet or antennae and wedge them in, too
