Real Time Spider Web Watch

Fulfills Step 4 of GSUSA Bugs badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements: Bug homes keep insects safe, help them find food, and protect their young. Homes can be made from silk, mud, leaves, or hidden places like soil or wood. Bugs use them to rest, raise eggs, or trap prey.


Items Needed:

  • Access to a spider web (outside window, porch, garden, garage, etc.)
  • Observation sheet or notebook
  • Pencil or crayon
  • Adult partner for help

Instructions (Total Estimated Time: A few minutes each day for 7 days):

  1. Find a Spider Web
    • With an adult, choose a safe place where a spider lives on its web
    • It can be outdoors or near a window
  2. Watch and Record Daily (5–10 minutes per day)
    • Look at the web at different times (morning, afternoon, or evening)
    • Write or draw what you see: changes in the web, spider activity, weather, bugs caught
  3. Finish and Reflect
    • After a week, look at all your notes or drawings
    • Share what changed over time and what surprised you about the spider or its web
