Paper Plate Spider Model

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Bugs badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements – See below

Items Needed:

  • One paper plate per scout
  • Four black pipe cleaners per scout
  • Markers, crayons, or paint
  • Paint brushes (if using paint)
  • Googly eyes and/or glitter (optional)
  • Tape
  • One pair of scissors (shared)

Instructions (Total Estimated Time: 25–30 minutes):

  1. Decorate Spider Body (10–12 minutes)
    • Scouts use markers or paint to decorate the paper plate to look like a spider’s body
    • It can be common spider colors (black, brown) or creative ones, but leave space for eyes
  2. Add Eyes (5–7 minutes)
    • Scouts can draw or paint eyes onto the plate
    • Optional: glue on googly eyes or sprinkle glitter around the eye area
  3. Make and Attach Legs (10 minutes)
    • Leader helps cut each scout’s 4 pipe cleaners in half to make 8 legs
    • Scouts tape the legs to the sides or bottom of the paper plate
    • Pipe cleaners can be bent to make the spider stand
