Moon Sky Book

Activity Description: Scouts make a Moon sky book and draw what the Moon looks like on different days or times.

Info Needed: The moon looks different from night to night because it moves around Earth. Sometimes we see the whole moon, and sometimes we only see part of it. These changes are called moon phases. If you look at the moon each night, you can watch it slowly change shape, from a tiny sliver to a big round circle and back again.

Items Needed:

  • Paper (at least four sheets per scout)
  • Pencils, markers, crayons, glue, stickers
  • Stapler or string for binding
  • (Optional) Glitter or other decorations
  • (Optional) Access to NASA’s website for Moon pictures

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 25–35 min):

  1. Decorate the cover of the Moon sky book (5–7 min)
    • Scouts use art supplies to decorate a cover that shows something special about them.
  2. Observe and draw the Moon (5–7 min)
    • Go outside or look out a window if the Moon is visible.
    • Scouts draw what they see in the sky.
    • If the Moon is not visible, draw a Moon picture from memory or imagination.
  3. Take the book home for more observations (5–7 min)
    • Scouts go outside with an adult on two different days or times.
    • Before each time, make a prediction of what the Moon will look like.
    • Draw what they see and write down the date and time.
  4. Use NASA’s website if needed (3–5 min)
    • If the Moon is not visible, ask an adult to help find Moon pictures online.
    • Scouts choose two pictures and draw what they see.
  5. Bind the Moon sky book (3–4 min)
    • Use string or a stapler to bind the pages together.
    • Scouts bring their books to the next meeting to share what they discovered.
