Make a Cocoon

Fulfills Step 4 of GSUSA Bugs badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements: Bug homes keep insects safe, help them find food, and protect their young. Homes can be made from silk, mud, leaves, or hidden places like soil or wood. Bugs use them to rest, raise eggs, or trap prey.

Items Needed:

  • Half of a paper towel roll or one toilet paper roll (per scout)
  • Coffee filter butterfly (previously made by scout)
  • Crayons or markers
  • (Optional) Duct tape or decorative tape

Instructions (Total Time: 15–20 minutes):

  1. Make the Cocoon (8–10 minutes)
    • Pinch one end of the paper roll closed
    • Seal the closed end with tape so the butterfly stays inside
    • Leave the other end open so the butterfly can go in and out
  2. Decorate the Outside (5–7 minutes)
    • Scouts color the outside of the cocoon with crayons or markers
    • Optional: wrap the roll with decorative tape for extra flair
  3. Butterfly Emerges (2–3 minutes)
    • Scouts gently place their butterfly inside the cocoon, then pull it out to act out how butterflies emerge in nature
