Holiday – St. Patrick’s Day

🍀 Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Fun and Learning! 🍀

🌟 Calling all scouts! Join us for a day full of exciting activities to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. We’ve got something for everyone in three exciting categories: Art, Engineering, and Charity! 🌟

Art

🎨 Did you know St. Patrick’s Day was once associated with blue? Over time, it changed to green! Let’s get creative with Rainbows, Green, and Shamrock Shapes.

Engineering

🛠️ Saint Patrick is the Saint of Engineering because of his work building churches. Let’s channel our inner engineers!

  • Leprechaun Trap Challenge: Design and build a leprechaun trap using everyday materials like cardboard, string, and tape. Test it out and see if you can catch one! (Could replace the Fairy House project in Daisy Think Like an Engineering journey.)
  • Church Building Project: Create a miniature church model using building blocks or recycled materials. (Could replace the Emergency Shelter project in Junior Think Like an Engineering journey.)
  • Bridge Construction: Use popsicle sticks and glue to build a sturdy bridge. See how much weight it can hold! (Could replace the Cross a Canyon project in Daisy Think Like an Engineering journey.)
  • Shamrock Shooter Device: Get ready for some shamrock-launching fun! Design and build a Shamrock Shooter using materials like cardboard tubes, rubber bands, and paper shamrock cutouts. Test your device and see how far you can launch your shamrocks. It’s a great way to learn about force and motion while having a blast! (Could replace the Ball Launcher project in Brownie Think Like an Engineering journey.)

Remember that a Multi-Level Think Like an Engineering journey will typically contain only three projects across the different levels for all levels to earn them. You do not need to do 9 different projects to do a Daisy, Brownie, and Junior level Think Like an Engineering journey. Just make sure the projects use the Engineering Design Process and do three appropriately challenging projects for your own scouts!

Charity

🤝 St. Patrick was known for his charitable acts. Let’s spread kindness and give back to our community.

  • Kindness Cards: Make cards with positive messages and drawings to give to local nursing homes or hospitals. (Always a perfect fit with Considerate and Caring Petal).
  • Community Clean-Up: Organize a neighborhood clean-up event to pick up litter and beautify the area. (Can work towards several of the Camper badges or the GS Way badge).
  • Donation Drive: Collect gently used clothes, toys, and books to donate to local shelters or charities. (Add an education or advocacy aspect and tie it into a Take Action Plan).

Other Ways to Celebrate

  • Irish Folklore Storytelling 📖 Gather ’round and share tales of Irish folklore, from leprechauns to banshees. Encourage scouts to get creative and craft their own Irish-themed stories! (Check out the Writing themed badges).
  • Shamrock Scavenger Hunt 🔍 Organize a scavenger hunt where scouts search for hidden shamrocks. Add a twist by incorporating fun facts about Saint Patrick’s Day at each clue location. (Brownie Senses or a Investigative badge).
  • Crafting Celtic Knots 🧵 Dive into the art of Celtic knot-making! Scouts can create their own Celtic knot designs using colorful threads, ribbons, or even clay. (Make it part of an Art themed badge).
  • Irish Dance Workshop 💃 Put on your dancing shoes and learn some traditional Irish dance moves! Invite a local dance instructor or follow along with a dance tutorial. (Earn the Brownie Dancer badge!)
  • Saint Patrick’s Day Feast 🍀 Celebrate with a festive feast featuring Irish-inspired dishes. Scouts can contribute by preparing simple recipes like soda bread, Irish stew, or green-themed treats. (Check out the Cooking themed badges).
  • Green Thumb Gardening 🌿 Plant shamrocks or other green plants to commemorate the holiday. Scouts can learn about gardening and the significance of the shamrock in Irish culture. (Check out the Gardening themed badges).

Fun Patches

If you just want to have fun and not tie it to an official badge – there are still a lot of options for Fun Patches. Too many to list! Check out the different Fun Patch companies and see what they offer!

  • Our Favorite – Pot of Gold by E-Patches (in Canada)

Special Mention:

Let’s come together and celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day with creativity, ingenuity, and kindness. See you there! 🍀✨
