Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born on March 2, 1904. His birthday is celebrated annually with Read Across America Day, a nationwide reading initiative.

Ways to Celebrate
This special day is dedicated to fostering a love of reading and literacy in our young Scouts. Here are some fun and engaging activities to plan for your troop:
📖 Story Time: Host a reading session with classic Dr. Seuss books or other beloved children’s stories. Encourage the girls to bring their favorite books to share with the troop. All the Daisy Petals have stories that can be attached to them – add one in to your next Petal earning meeting! Use it to start your Brownie World Of Girls Journey or analyze the illustration style of Dr. Suess as part of Junior Art and Design.
📚 Book Swap: Organize a book exchange where Scouts can bring books they’ve finished reading and swap them with each other. It’s a great way to discover new favorites! Earn Brownie Making Friends while you are at it – or host another troop and Earn Junior Social Butterfly! Daisies can earn t
🖍️ Craft Time: Create Seuss-inspired crafts like Cat in the Hat hats, Lorax mustaches, or bookmarks featuring their favorite characters. Earn one of the Art themed badges centered around reading.
🎭 Theatrical Fun: Put on a small play or skit based on a popular children’s book. Let the girls get creative with costumes and props. If you theme it right, it can be used as part of the Brownie World Of Girls Journey, or the Junior Amuse or Junior Agent of Change journeys. Again, All the Daisy Petals have stories that can be attached to them – act one out in your next Petal earning meeting!
🌟 Reading Challenge: Set a reading goal for the month of March and reward the girls with a special fun patch or treat once they’ve achieved it.
Elementary Book Recommendations
Remember that February is also Women’s History Month. Books about women for Elementary students could be:
- “Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist” by Jess Keating – The inspiring story of Eugenie Clark, who dedicated her life to studying sharks.
- “Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race” by Margot Lee Shetterly – The story of four Black women who played crucial roles at NASA during the space race.
- “Mae Among the Stars” by Roda Ahmed – A picture book about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space.
- “The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin” by Julia Finley Mosca -The story of Temple Grandin, a scientist and inventor who overcame autism.
- “The Doctor with an Eye for Eyes: The Story of Dr. Patricia Bath” by Julia Finley Mosca -The story of Dr. Patricia Bath, who became a pioneering ophthalmologist
If you want a Girl Scout centered book, most are about Juliette Gordon Low, but there are a few other options:
- “Here Come the Girl Scouts!: The Amazing All-True Story of Juliette ‘Daisy’ Gordon Low and Her Great Adventure” by Shana Corey – The story of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts.
- “First Girl Scout: The Life of Juliette Gordon Low” by Ginger Wadsworth – A detailed biography of Juliette Gordon Low.
- “Raise Your Hand” by Alice Paul Tapper – A book encouraging girls to be confident and take initiative, inspired by Girl Scouting.
- “Path to the Stars: My Journey from Girl Scout to Rocket Scientist” by Sylvia Acevedo – The memoir of Sylvia Acevedo, a former Girl Scout who became a rocket scientist.
- “Maven Takes the Lead” by Yamile Saied Méndez – A novel about a Girl Scout named Maven who learns about leadership and teamwork.
Other Options:
- Mouse Scout books are a fun one for Elementary aged scouts. They don’t feature a woman for woman history month. They are about scouting like activities, it isn’t GSUSA.
- Rachele Alpine’s “You Throw Like a Girl” is interesting and has a patch program the author supports.
