Egg Carton Caterpillar

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Bugs badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements – See below

Items Needed:

  • One egg carton strip (6 connected cups) per scout
  • One pipe cleaner per scout
  • Markers, crayons, or paint
  • Paint brushes (if using paint)
  • Round objects for eyes (buttons, beads, paper dots, etc.)
  • Glue or tape
  • One pair of scissors or hole punch (shared)

Instructions (Total Estimated Time: 22–26 minutes):

  1. Decorate Caterpillar Body (10–12 minutes)
    • Scouts use markers or paint to color their egg carton strip
    • Common caterpillar colors include green, yellow, and black
    • Encourage creative patterns and designs
  2. Make and Attach Antennae (7–8 minutes)
    • Leader helps poke two holes in the top of the first cup
    • Scouts push one pipe cleaner through both holes and bend it into antennae shapes
  3. Add Eyes (5–6 minutes)
    • Scouts draw, paint, or glue round objects onto the head for eyes
    • Optional: decorate eye area with glitter or color accents
