Cultivate Commitment

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Cadette MEdia Journey Set requirements.

Items needed

  • Pens or pencils
  • Paper or notebook (enough for at least one per scout)
  • Art supplies (markers, colored pencils, glue, etc.)
  • Optional: Digital tools like a computer, tablet, or phone for designing media

Instructions

  1. Begin by writing a commitment statement starting with: “I commit to ___.” Think about an issue in media or your own habits that you want to change or improve.
  2. Use your unique talents to create media that encourages others to join your commitment. Here are some ideas based on your commitment:
    • If you commit to not having unwanted messages in magazines, design your own magazine or zine with positive and inspiring content.
    • If you commit to speaking up about hurtful depictions in movies, create a fun and creative invite for others to join a movie critique group.
    • If you commit to being healthier and more active, invent a dance or movement challenge called “I’m not sitting in front of the TV or computer anymore” and share it with friends.
  3. Once your media is ready, share it with others to spread your message. You could present it to family, friends, or classmates, or use social media or local events to reach a larger audience.
