Build a Bug Box

Fulfills Step 3 of GSUSA Bugs badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements: They observe and talk about what the bugs are doing without touching or disturbing them. This activity builds observation skills and curiosity about nature.

Items Needed:

  • Cardboard shoebox with removable lid
  • Plastic wrap (one piece per scout)
  • Tape or glue
  • Sharp tool for air holes (used by adults only)
  • Natural outdoor materials: grass, twigs, leaves, small rocks
  • One bug per scout (lightning bug, grasshopper, moth, beetle, etc.)
  • Optional: Printed VTK Make a Bug Box by GSUSA

Instructions (Total Time: 30–35 minutes):

  1. Prepare the Bug Box (10–12 minutes)
    • Remove the lid from the shoebox
    • Cut a rectangle (about 6 inches × 3 inches) from one of the long sides
    • Tape or glue plastic wrap over the opening to make a clear viewing window
    • Make sure it’s sealed tightly so bugs can’t crawl out
  2. Add Breathing Holes (3–4 minutes)
    • With adult help, poke three small holes on each side of the box
    • Keep holes smaller than the bug so it stays safely inside
  3. Build the Bug’s Home (8–10 minutes)
    • Add soft, natural materials to the bottom of the box
    • Use things found near where the bug lives: twigs, leaves, pebbles, grass
    • Avoid pulling too much from nature, take only what’s needed
  4. Gently Add a Bug (5–6 minutes)
    • Place the bug inside the box using care and kindness
    • Cover the box loosely with the lid or observe through the clear window
    • Watch what the bug does and how it interacts with its mini habitat
  5. Return the Bug (2–3 minutes)
    • After observation, carefully place the bug back where it was found
    • Remind scouts to be respectful and gentle with living things
