Background Music, Anyone?

One of the 8 options for Step 1 of GSUSA Cadette MEdia Journey Set requirements.

Items needed

  • Pens or pencils
  • Paper (enough for at least one per scout)

Instructions

  1. Scouts think about commercials, ball games, and shopping malls, and reflect on what music is meant to accomplish in each setting.
  2. Over two days—one weekday and one weekend—scouts track when and where they hear music. This could be during commercials, at school, in stores, or anywhere else they go.
  3. For each instance, scouts write down:
    • Where they heard the music.
    • How the music made them feel or react.
    • Whether they think the music achieved its purpose (e.g., grabbing attention, creating excitement, setting a mood).
  4. Afterward, scouts reflect on how music influences them and discuss whether they noticed any differences between the weekday and weekend observations.
