Investigate home rules

Activities

  • Review good manners (i.e. please/thank you, holding the door, etc.) and role play some.
  • Mother-Daughter Tea Party to show respect for the girls’ mothers
  • Host a Daughters and Dads sports night to show they respect their fathers

Crafts

Read

  • Read “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain
  • Read “The Berenstain Bears Forget Their Manners” by Stan & Jan Berenstain 

Investigate school rules

  • Create Notes for their teachers to give future students the following year.

Investigate community rules

Activities

  • listening to the adults: leaders, chaperones, workers, guest speakers, etc.
  • Sing a Repeat and Answer song with actions and respect the song leader
  • Have scouts dress up like someone they think of as an authority figure
  • Role play scenarios like a crossing guard
  • Discuss laws (municipality, state, country) and how we follow. Pick one law to discuss how it keeps us safe.

Service

  • Thank you cards or bake cookies to thank police officers or other authority figures for the work they do
  • Plant or repot flowers to give to a parent, teacher, coach
  • Plan an event to thank police officers or other authority figures for the work they do

Crafts

  • Create a collage of safety tips cut from magazines, newsletters, brochures and various other media

Stories

  • Read “Rules! Rules! Rules!” by Malcolm Munene
  • Read “One Word From Sophia” by Jim Averbeck
  • Read “Library Lion” by Michelle Knudsen
  • Read “What If Everybody Did That” by Ellen Javernick

Field Trips

Make sure all requirements are met when going or have a pre-field trip meeting to hit the requirements.

  • Fire Department
  • Police Station
  • Visit their kindergarten or first grade teacher. Ask if she is willing to stay after school and speak about what she does. She can show the children all the planning it takes to teach them every day. They may even be able to “help” her hang up a bulletin board, staple or collate papers or help set up an activity for class the next day.

Guest Speakers

Make sure all requirements are met when there are there or have a meeting before or after the guest speaker to hit the requirements.

  • Fireman
  • School Principle
  • Ask a teacher, principal, doctor, etc. to come talk to the troop about their job and how people depend on them – or nurse, dentist, or any other community helper
  • K9 officer and his dog come to troop meeting
