What is this badge about?

Plan a novel with engaging characters and plot and write at least 20 pages.

Our Summary* of requirements:

  1. Using any published novel that is over 200 pages, choose one activity that helps analyze it (write a review, make a plot chart, OR write a report as if you were the editor of the book).
  2. Create an original character profile OR create three character profiles for three people you know OR three characters from a novel.
  3. Create an original plot after some research (find three examples of character-driven AND three action-driven plots, interview a novelist or writing teacher about plot, OR read five interviews with novelists about creating plots).
  4. Write 20 pages of your own original novel (the first 20 pages, important scenes adding up to 20 pages, OR the last 20 pages).
  5. Do a first-pass edit (wait a day before re-reading your own story and editing it) AND have someone else give you feedback (two friends/family, a critique group, OR a mentor).
