2011 – C/S/A App Development – Activity List

All three C/S/A levels have similar requirements. Find the projects that appropriately challenge your troop.

Lists of activities are in no specific order, but the easier ones are listed near the top and the harder ones for Ambassadors would be found near the bottom of the lists. Make sure you hit an activity in each of the 5 areas:

(Note – Habit Tracker compiled by The Badge Archive hits all but the “Objects” area).

Activity Ideas (listed under each requirement)

Activity #1 (OPTION A): Data Visualization (See OPTION B for Ambassador)

  • Cadette & Senior: Learn about different ways to visually show data (charts, diagrams, infographics).

Choose one activity:

Activity #1 (OPTION B): Advanced Data Visualization (See OPTION A for C/S)

  • Ambassador: Learn about data visualization beyond the standard charts, graphs, and tables (i.e. bubble charts, steam graphs, calendars, clocks, timelines, OR maps) and create one.

Activity #2 (OPTION A): Objects (See OPTION B for S/A)

  • Cadette: Write an array listing something (i.e. the shoes you own (var myShoes =[“1”, “2”,…]).).

  • Senior: Create a code about one set of data using the format for objects.

Activity #3: Analyze Data (Only Cadettes need 2 types)

  • Cadette: Learn how to take two types of data and visualize it so patterns can be found. Senior & Ambassador: Use the data you collected and analyze it in one way.

Activity #4: Data Collection

  • Cadette: Think of a habit that you can measure progress in some way and create an app idea that would collect that data; Senior & Ambassador: Decide one way to collect data for a specific topic and collect it

  • Cadette: Think of a way to make a health of habit-tracking app easy and fun. Senior & Ambassador: Create an app based on the data collected, including prototype of what the screen looks like, a list of features, and how it functions.

Meeting Plans

Basic Plans, based around the Habit Tracker activity.

  • GSUSA Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) free plan for 2 Meetings for each level – No links available. This is only accessible through MyGS log-in on Council’s website for troop leaders

Cadette VTK

  • Mtg 1: Brainstorm Healthy Habits You Can Track, Bar Chart, and JavaScript Arrays
  • Mtg 2: Analyze Data, Design App, and Create App Sales Pitch

Senior VTK

  • Mtg 1: Brainstorm Community Problems, Bar Chart, and JavaScript Data Objects
  • Mtg 2: Analyze Data – Pie Chart, and Design Social App

Ambassador VTK

  • Mtg 1: Brainstorm App Ideas, JavaScript Data Objects, Big Data Visualization, and Data Collection Interview
  • Mtg 2: Data Object from Interview Results, and App Design based on Interview Results

At Home Coding Badge Alternative: Girl Scout Account on Vidcode to earn the 3 Coding badges using GSUSA Cadette Level Instructions (Senior and Ambassador level classes are included on Vidcode when you follow the Cadette level instructions).
