Winter Security

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Brownie Cybersecurity Basics badge requirements.

Items Needed

  • One set of Winter clothes: sweater, coat, scarf, gloves, hat

Instructions

  1. Talk about how protecting yourself online is similar to dressing in layers for cold weather.
  2. Use the clothes to show how each layer represents a type of security. One scout gets dressed up with the layers. Explain each layer as they put it on. (See Layers of Security for more details)
    • Sweater: Physical security (wise choices by the user).
    • Coat: Physical security (guards or physical device protection).
    • Scarf: Network security (firewalls protecting communication).
    • Gloves: Operating system security (built-in anti-virus protection).
    • Hat: Application security (extra anti-virus programs).
  3. Ask scouts to think about what layers of security they use at home. For example, do they have passwords, firewalls, or anti-virus software?
