Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Uniquely Us badge requirements.
Info Needed: Celebrate how each person is one-of-a-kind while exploring the ways we’re all connected. They share personal facts to discover common ground and celebrate what makes each person unique.
Items Needed:
- One large ball of yarn
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 minutes):
- Form a Circle (3–5 minutes)
- Scouts stand or sit in a circle with space between each person.
- Explain that they will build a connection web using a ball of yarn.
- (Optional) Review safe handling so yarn doesn’t get tangled too tightly.
- Share and Pass the Yarn (12–15 minutes)
- One scout starts with the yarn and shares a personal fact (e.g., “I love cats,” “My favorite color is green.”).
- Any scout who shares that trait raises their hand.
- Yarn passes to one of those scouts, while the original scout holds the end.
- The new scout shares a different fact, and the process continues.
- If no one shares the trait, the scout shares a new fact before passing the yarn.
- Continue until everyone gets at least one turn or until the web is complete.
- Reflect on the Web (5–10 minutes)
- Scouts look at the yarn pattern they’ve created and reflect on how they’re all connected.
- Discuss how some traits are shared and some are unique—and both are meaningful.
- (Optional) Invite scouts to name one thing they learned or felt proud to share.
