Want and Need Flashcards

Items Needed:

  • 7 blank index cards (or pieces of a paper cut into 4) per scout
  • Crayons, pencils, or markers
  • Optional: clipboards or writing surface

Instructions (Estimated Time: 10–15 minutes):

  1. Create the Flashcards (5–6 minutes)
    • Each scout makes 7 simple cards:
      • On one side: draw an item clearly enough for someone to guess
      • On the other side: write the item’s name (if they can) and add N for need or W for want
      • Scouts may include their name if they want to keep their cards
      • Items can be groceries, clothes, school supplies, or fun extras. Whatever they think of!
  2. Partner & Guess (5–6 minutes)
    • Scouts pair up.
    • One scout shows their flashcards (drawing side only) while the partner:
      • Tries to guess what each item is
      • Decides if it’s a Need or a Want
    • Then they switch roles and repeat.
  3. Quick Wrap-Up (2–3 minutes)
    • As a group, invite a few scouts to share:
      • One item they guessed correctly
      • An example of a need and a want they saw
      • Collect the cards or let scouts take them home
