Try Out Camp Gear

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Cabin Camper badge requirements.

Items Needed:

  • A selection of camping gear for scouts to explore (choose 3–4 items):
    • Sleeping bag
    • Flashlight or lantern
    • Camp mug or dish
    • Toothbrush and washcloth
    • Raincoat or jacket
    • Backpack
    • Tent (optional, if space allows)

Instructions (Total Time: 35 minutes):

  1. Introduce the Gear (5–7 minutes)
    • Show one item at a time and ask scouts to guess what it’s used for
    • Explain when and why the item is helpful during camping
  2. Learn How to Use It (10–12 minutes)
    • Demonstrate how to set up, open, wear, or use each item
    • Keep steps simple and easy to follow
  3. Practice Together (10–12 minutes)
    • Scouts take turns using or setting up each item
    • Encourage teamwork and helping others if someone gets stuck
  4. Reflect and Review (5–6 minutes)
    • Ask scouts what item was easiest to use and what was trickiest
    • Talk about why practicing gear helps you feel ready for camp
    • Remind scouts to always ask for help if they’re unsure during a trip
