Solo Backyard Campout

Items Needed:

  • Backyard camping setup (tent, sleeping bag, pillow, flashlight)
  • Water bottle and snacks or prepped meal
  • (Optional) notebook and pencil, bug spray, sunscreen
  • (Optional) hiking map or parent-approved backyard trail
  • (Optional) printed scavenger hunt sheet or small camp game

Instructions (Total Time: Flexible for overnight camping):

  1. Set Up Camp and Get Ready
    • Choose your camping spot (tent, porch, treehouse, or under the stars)
    • Set up your sleeping gear and place items where you can reach them easily
    • Make sure water, food, and flashlight are nearby
  2. Choose a Solo Activity to Make It Fun (Pick 1 or More)
    • Outdoor Game Options:
      • Play flashlight tag with yourself using shadows and light shapes.
      • Try balancing or hopscotch games on patio stones
      • Bounce or toss a soft ball and count catches or trick moves
    • Nature Exploration Options:
      • Do a backyard scavenger hunt for leaves, bugs, colors, or smells
      • Make up a nature hike route in your backyard and pretend you’re on a trail
      • Use a notebook to sketch or describe what you see
    • Creative or Quiet Time Options:
      • Write a camp story or draw a comic strip of your adventure
      • Listen to campfire music or tell a story using stuffed animals
  3. Reflect and Celebrate Your Camping Experience
    • Write or draw your favorite part of the night
    • Ask a family member to look at what you packed or hear about your adventure
    • Take a photo of your camping setup to share at your next meeting or with your leader
