Simple Photo Manipulation

Partially fulfills Step 4 of GSUSA Outside the Mirror badge requirements – needs explanations and discussion, like in the Image Manipulation Lesson.

Info Needed: Media images often use lighting, makeup, angles, and editing to change how someone looks, sometimes dramatically.

Items Needed:

  • Smartphone or tablet per scout or pair.
  • A saved image in the photo gallery (preferably a portrait or scenery photo).
  • (Optional) Stylus or touchscreen pen.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 5–8 min):

  1. Open a saved photo in your device’s photo gallery. (Estimated Time: 1 min)
    • Scouts can use a selfie or sample image taken earlier in the session.
    • Tap “Edit” or the pencil icon to enter the photo editing menu.
  2. Try three basic edits. (Estimated Time: 4–6 min)
    • Brightness/Contrast: Slide to brighten or darken the photo.
    • Filters or Auto-Enhance: Apply a preset look to change tone or mood.
    • Skin smoothing or detail: Use “Portrait,” “Face,” or “Enhance” settings to blur imperfections or adjust sharpness (varies by device).
    • (Optional) Try changing the background using a built-in blur tool or crop function.
  3. Save your edited photo and compare it to the original. (Estimated Time: 1 min)
    • Scouts can reflect on how different choices changed how the image looks.
    • (Optional) Share edits with a buddy to talk about which changes are noticeable or surprising.
