Shred It Activity

Fulfills Step 4 of GSUSA Brownie Cybersecurity Safeguards badge requirements.

Items Needed

  • (Optional) Safety scissors
  • Paper (one sheet per scout)
  • Pens, pencils, or crayons

Instructions

  1. Scouts write or draw private information (like their name, address, or birthday) on a piece of paper.
  2. Scouts create a simple secret password (6–8 letters or numbers) and add it to their paper.
  3. Encourage scouts to destroy their papers creatively using one of the methods. Show them how simply crumpling the paper isn’t enough to hide the information. Explain that shredding or destroying private information keeps it safe from strangers.
  4. Scouts destroy their paper by ripping, cutting it into tiny pieces, or crossing out everything. Once destroyed, scouts toss their paper into a trash can.
