Fulfills Step 1 of GSUSA Daisy Cybersecurity Investigator badge requirements.
Items needed
- 5 color pictures of animals (examples: giraffe, gorilla, whale, elephant, dolphin, bull, zebra, etc.)
- Optional: Stuffed or plastic toy versions of the animals
Instructions
- Display the animal pictures or toys at the front of the room.
- Explain to scouts that they will be asking questions to guess which animal you are thinking of.
- Begin by introducing the idea of investigating, which means looking closely and asking questions to find answers. Link this activity to how we use computers to search for information by asking the right questions.
- Give an example: If someone wanted to learn about bunny rabbits before getting one as a pet, they might ask questions like:
- Where can a bunny live in my house?
- What does a bunny eat and drink?
- Can a bunny have a friend?
- Ask scouts to think of questions they could ask about the animals on display to figure out which one you’re thinking of. For example:
- Does it have fur?
- Does it live in water?
- Does it have teeth?
- Is it big?
- Line up scouts at one end of the room. One at a time, each scout asks a “yes” or “no” question about the animal you are thinking of. After their turn, they dash to the other side of the room to wait.
- Once all scouts have asked their questions, invite them to guess the animal. After a correct guess, encourage them to pretend to be that animal by imitating its movements and sounds.
- Repeat the activity with another animal if time allows.
- Reflect with scouts:
- Was it easy or hard to guess the animal?
- What question and answer helped the most?
