Repurpose a Jar

Items Needed:

  • One clean, empty jar or can per scout
  • Crayons, markers, or stickers
  • Craft supplies (yarn, paper, washi tape, glue, etc.)
  • Optional: Extra jars or cans for scouts who didn’t bring one
  • Optional: Play money for pretend price tags or budgeting fun

Instructions (Estimated Time: 20–30 minutes):

  1. Get Ready (5 minutes)
    • Each scout picks a jar or can to work with.
    • Explain that by giving this item a new purpose instead of throwing it away or recycling it, scouts help save money that could be used for other things they need or want.
  2. Decorate and Repurpose (10–15 minutes)
    • Scouts decorate their jar or can however they like.
    • They can turn it into:
      • A pencil holder
      • A coin jar
      • A flower vase
      • A supply cup
      • Let them be creative!
  3. Share and Reflect (5–10 minutes)
    • Scouts show what they made and explain how they repurposed it.
    • Ask what other items could be reused at home or school.
    • Optional: Display their creations in a “repurpose gallery.”
