Information needed for the badge requirement: A protocol is just another word for rules—things that help people or computers know what to do. For example, in everyday life, you follow rules like stopping at stop signs or raising your hand in class to speak. These keep everything organized and safe. Computers follow protocols, too! Just like rules in real life, these protocols help computers communicate safely and smoothly.
Items Needed
- Two dice
- Whiteboard or Paper
- Markers
Instructions
- Together, create six simple rules—one for each number on a dice. Write the rules on a whiteboard or paper. Examples:
- Spin around three times.
- Do five jumping jacks.
- Jump into the air.
- Do your favorite dance move.
- Clap your hands five times quickly.
- Raise your hands and wiggle your fingers.
- Scouts take turns rolling the dice. Each scout follows the protocol assigned to the number they roll.
- Play a second round where scouts can choose whether to follow the protocol or do something different.
- Talk about how the game worked when everyone followed the rules compared to when they didn’t. Discuss how protocols are important for computers to share information safely and where else scouts use rules in daily life.
