Pretend Pet Check-Up

Fulfills Step 1 of GSUSA Brownie Pets badge requirements.

Items Needed

  • Toy medical tools (doctor kits from dollar stores work well)
  • A stuffed animal to act as the “pet patient.

Instructions

  1. Perform a Vet Check-Up
    • Use toy tools to give the stuffed animal a full check-up.
    • Demonstrate how a vet checks the eyes, ears, coat, teeth, and stomach, explaining why each check is important.
  2. Scout Participation
    • Each scout takes a turn using the toy tools to check the stuffed animal.
    • Encourage them to observe and talk about what they are “examining.”
  3. Learn About Pet Care
    • Discuss why pets need vaccines, yearly exams, and regular health check-ups.
    • Talk about how much it costs to care for different pets, including vet visits, food, space, and daily needs.
  4. Compare Different Pets
    • Pick three types of pets and compare:
      • How much does it cost to care for them?
      • How much space do they need?
      • How much food do they eat?
      • How much human interaction do they enjoy?
      • (See Pet Care Research for sample answers to these questions)
