Items Needed:
- Printed map of the planned campground or hiking area
- Paper and pencil for each scout
- (Optional) Packing Basics by GSUSA (one per scout)
- (Optional) Types of Hikes page on The Badge Archive
Instructions (Total Time: 10 minutes):
- Choose a Trail Route (5–6 minutes)

- As a troop, decide how far the hike will go and where it will start and end
- Talk briefly about what the trail looks like (flat, hilly, shaded, etc.)
- Plan What to Bring (3–4 minutes)
- Scouts list what gear they’ll need for the hike (water, sun protection, sturdy shoes, etc.)
- Use the Packing Basics handout to help guide choices
Optional Extension (Add 5–10 minutes):
- Visit the Types of Hikes page on The Badge Archive
- Scouts choose what kind of hike they want it to be (e.g., scavenger hunt hike, quiet nature hike, photo hike)
- Add any special items they’ll need based on the type of hike they choose
