Oops Stories

Can be used towards Step 1 of GSUSA Cadette Netiquette badge requirements.

An “Oops” story is about a moment when something you posted or said online caused a problem, hurt someone’s feelings, or was misunderstood. It’s a reminder to think carefully before hitting send!

Here are examples of “Oops” moments middle schoolers might experience on social media:

  1. Accidental Sharing: A scout posts a group photo from a party, not realizing someone in the picture didn’t want it shared. The person feels upset because they weren’t comfortable having their photo online.
  2. Misunderstood Joke: A scout makes a sarcastic comment on a friend’s post, but it’s misunderstood by others who think it’s mean. This causes hurt feelings and tension between friends.
  3. Posting in Anger: A scout feels upset after an argument and posts a rant about the situation. Later, they regret it because it caused unnecessary drama and embarrassed their friend.
  4. Unintended Exclusion: A scout shares a post tagging a group of friends but accidentally leaves someone out who feels hurt and excluded when they see it.
  5. Comment Regret: A scout comments on a post without thinking it through, and their words come across as rude or critical. They later realize it hurt the person who posted it.
  6. Unintentional Oversharing: A scout shares a personal story on their account, not realizing it could make someone else involved in the story uncomfortable or upset.
  7. Responding in the Heat of the Moment: A scout gets into a disagreement in the comments section and posts something mean. Later, they regret how they handled the situation.
  8. Forgetting to Credit: A scout reposts someone’s artwork, photo, or video without giving credit to the original creator, causing frustration or disappointment for the person who made it.
  9. Posting Without Consent: A scout shares a picture of a group outing, not realizing someone in the photo didn’t want it shared publicly. This causes embarrassment for the person involved.
  10. Reacting Negatively: A scout sees a post they disagree with and comments something that feels overly harsh or aggressive. This leads to hurt feelings or unnecessary conflict.
  11. Misleading Content: A scout shares a joke or meme without context, and others misunderstand it as being offensive or inappropriate.
  12. Unkind Exclusion: A scout tags friends in a post about an event but purposely leaves someone out, making them feel hurt or excluded.
