Online Safety Poster

Fulfills Step 3 of GSUSA Brownie Cybersecurity Basics badge requirements.

Items Needed

  • Poster boards (one for each team)
  • Colored pens and markers
  • Optional supplies: stencils, stick-on letters, decorative stickers, magazines for cutting photos, scissors
  • Whiteboard or large poster board displaying these cybersecurity rules:
    1. Don’t talk to strangers.
    2. Stop and think about your actions.
    3. Don’t believe everything you see or that people tell you.

Instructions

  1. Split scouts into three teams, and assign each team one of the three cybersecurity rules.
  2. Go over the three rules together as a group. Help scouts understand how the rules apply to using computers:
    • Rule 1: Don’t talk to strangers online or respond to unknown messages. Always tell a trusted adult.
    • Rule 2: Stop and think before clicking links or sharing private information. Be cautious to avoid harmful actions online.
    • Rule 3: Be aware that things on the internet might not always be real. People may try to trick you.
  3. Each team designs a poster to illustrate their assigned rule. Encourage creativity with drawings, cut-out pictures, or decorations.
  4. Teams present their posters to the group, explaining why their rule is important for online safety. As a group, talk about real-life rules that also apply to computers, such as staying in safe places, not going online without permission, treating borrowed devices responsibly, and being kind online.
  5. Ask scouts where their posters could be displayed to teach others about cybersecurity (e.g., school, library, computer lab). They do not need to display it unless it’s possible – but brainstorm ideas of where it could be useful to have.
