One Medium, Many Ideas

Activity Description: Scouts explore a single type of art and create their own response through drawing or writing.

Info Needed: Artists and designers use different materials (called mediums) to create all kinds of art. Makers may draw, paint, build, sculpt, or even create art on a computer. By exploring the styles and materials they use, we can better understand what creativity looks like around us, and how it can inspire our own art.

Items Needed:

  • Printed examples or digital images of artworks from a single medium or subject
  • Paper
  • Pencils or crayons

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 25 min):

  1. Scouts view artwork that fits one theme or medium (5 min)
    • Examples include only paintings, only sculptures, or only nature-themed art.
  2. Scouts observe and describe what they see (10 min)
    • What do they notice?
    • What materials were used?
    • How does the artwork make them feel?
  3. Scouts draw or write about a piece that inspired them (10 min)
    • (Optional) Use color or texture to show how the art made them feel.

Bonus Challenge:

Scouts find additional examples of art from the same medium or subject in their environment.
