Observe Live Animals

Activity Description: Scouts observe a live animal and record what they notice using a simple worksheet.

Info Needed: We cannot speak the same language, but we learn a lot about animals just by watching them. What actions do they make? What do they eat? What kind of families do they have?

Items Needed:

  • Visit a petting zoo, farm, park, or other location to observe animals OR bring an animal to the meeting
  • Animal Observation sheet for each scout
  • Pens or pencils
  • (Optional) Binoculars

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20 min):

  1. Scouts choose an animal they want to observe. (3 min)
    • Let them know they’ll be watching closely to learn about the animal’s behavior.
  2. Share a few fun facts about the chosen animal. (3 min)
    • Keep it short and simple so scouts can connect what they hear with what they see.
  3. Visit a location with live animals or bring one to the meeting. (5 min)
    • Make sure scouts can safely observe the animal up close.
    • (Optional) Use binoculars for a closer look.
  4. Scouts complete their Animal Observation sheet. (6 min)
    • They can write or draw what they notice about the animal’s actions, food, and family.
