Move for Wants and Needs

Items Needed:

Instructions (Recommended Time: 30–40 minutes):

  1. Prepare the Cards (5–10 minutes)
    • Scouts write or draw one item on each index card. Use a mix of wants and needs.
Examples: apple, teddy bear, shoes, video game, toothpaste, jacket, toy car, backpack, candy, sandwich.
    • Only one set of cards is needed for the whole group.
  2. Set the Movement Rules (2–3 minutes)
    • Choose two simple movements to show what the scout thinks:
      • Stand up for a “Need”
      • Sit down for a “Want” (Or use thumbs up/down or hop/spin—any movement that works!)
  3. Play the Game (15–20 minutes)
    • Read one card aloud at a time. Scouts respond by doing the movement they chose for want or need. Remind them:
      • There’s no single “right” answer
      • Everyone should make their own choice
  4. Reflect Together (5–7 minutes)
    • After several rounds, ask:
      • Did anyone choose differently?
      • Was it hard to decide on any item?
      • Are some things both a want and a need?
