Activity Description: Scouts explore a nearby outdoor space through movement and hands-on activities, then reflect on what they learned

Info Needed: Scouts explore how their bodies help them learn and experience new things through physical movement and hands-on activities outside the meeting space.


Items Needed:

  • Varies based on the selected activity (examples: ball for catch, clipboard for observations, water bottles for hydration)

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 minutes):

  1. Prepare and Choose Activity (3–5 minutes)
    • Leader identifies available space nearby (backyard, sidewalk, open lot)
    • Scouts gather any needed items or tools for the selected movement experience
  2. Try Something New (12–15 minutes)
    • Scout participates in a physical activity in the outdoor space
      • Examples:
        • Play a game like tag or catch
        • Observe nature and sketch what they see
        • Walk a short path and use senses to notice smells, textures, or sounds
        • Visit a nearby place like a farmers market or community center (if available)
      • Encourage scouts to move, stretch, explore, and notice their surroundings
  3. Reflect on Movement and Learning (5–7 minutes)
    • Scouts talk about how movement helped them learn something new
    • Optional prompts:
      • What did your body do today to help you explore?
      • Which sense helped you the most during the activity?
  4. Wrap-Up (3–4 minutes)
    • Scouts name one way they could explore the world through movement at home or in their neighborhood
    • Optional: draw a picture of their body doing something joyful or new
