Mindfulness Walk

Fulfills Step 4 of GSUSA Mind, Body, Me badge requirements.

Info Needed: Mindfulness helps scouts notice what’s going on in their body and mind in the present moment. It can improve well-being and help them respond to stress or discomfort more thoughtfully.

Items Needed:

  • Comfortable clothing and shoes.
  • Safe outdoor or indoor path for walking or riding.
  • (Optional) Journal or sketchbook.
  • (Optional) Mobility aid, bike, scooter, or adapted equipment for riding.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 min):

  1. Choose your movement. (Estimated Time: 2–5 min)
    • Scouts select whether to walk or ride based on comfort and accessibility.
    • Leader ensures the route or space is safe, familiar, and inclusive.
  2. Move mindfully. (Estimated Time: 10–15 min)
    • Scouts begin walking or riding slowly and with awareness.
    • Encourage them to notice details in their environment: sights, sounds, smells, textures.
    • Scouts check in with their body during the movement, breathing, posture, tension, and comfort.
    • (Optional) Leader reminds scouts to move at their own pace and take breaks as needed.
  3. Reflect and share. (Estimated Time: 5–10 min)
    • Scouts describe how their body and mind felt before, during, and after the mindful movement.
    • Scouts discuss what they noticed and how it affected their mood or stress level.
    • (Optional) Scouts sketch, write, or make a list of sensory details or feelings from the experience.
