Make and Observe for Young Children

*Inspired by an activity choice in the GSUSA 1980s program for Across Generations

Younger children learn through play. Bright colors, fun shapes, letters, and toys all help their brains grow. You’ll choose one of three projects to create something special for little kids:

Once you’ve made your item, you’ll use it with real children (like younger siblings, neighbors, or friends) and observe how they interact with it. Do they smile, get curious, ask questions, or play in a certain way? Watching them helps you learn about how kids grow and respond.

Take Action

Choose one project to make, use it with younger children, and record what you observe.

My Project Choice:
☐ Alphabet chart or book
☐ Cardboard letters
☐ Safe toy

Use My Project:

  • Who will I use it with?
    ☐ Sibling
    ☐ Neighbor
    ☐ Family friend
    ☐ Group at school/troop
    ☐ Other: _________________________

Using My Creation:
☐ I played or read with younger children
☐ I explained how the activity works
☐ I asked what they liked or noticed
☐ I let them explore and play

Observation Notes:

  • What did the children do while using my project?

  • What parts made them curious or happy?

  • Did they say anything interesting or surprising?

  • What would I improve or do differently next time?
