Make a Sock Puppet

Items Needed:

  • Clean sock
  • Buttons
  • Yarn
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • (Optional) Felt or fabric scraps
  • (Optional) Needle and thread

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 25 min):

  1. Choose a clean sock and decide which end will be the puppet’s face. (2 min)
    • Longer socks work well for arm-length puppets.
    • The toe area usually becomes the mouth or nose.
  2. Plan the puppet’s character—think about eyes, hair, and personality. (3 min)
    • Scouts can sketch ideas or describe them aloud.
    • Encourage creativity: animal, alien, person, etc.
  3. Attach buttons or felt pieces for eyes using glue or thread. (5 min)
    • (Optional) Use googly eyes or draw eyes with markers.
    • Let glue set before adding more parts.
  4. Cut yarn into short strands and glue or sew them on for hair. (5 min)
    • (Optional) Use fabric scraps for hats or bows.
    • Hair can go on top or sides depending on the character.
  5. Add any extra features like a nose, mouth, or accessories. (5 min)
    • Use felt, buttons, or fabric scraps.
    • (Optional) Make movable arms by sewing or gluing on small fabric tubes.
  6. Let the puppet dry and then test it by putting a hand inside and moving the mouth. (5 min)
    • Encourage scouts to try different voices or expressions.
    • Puppets can be used in skits or storytelling later.
