Make a Medal of Honor

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Daisy Petal – Courageous and Strong badge requirements.

Items Needed:

  • Paper plates (one per scout)
  • Coloring supplies (crayons, markers, or colored pencils)
  • Ribbon
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors
  • Stickers, ribbon, or other craft materials for decoration with glue to attach them to the plate.

Instructions:

  1. Explain that people can be emotionally and mentally strong, not just physically strong. Encourage scouts to think of family, friends, or community members who show courage or strength in their actions or words. Talk about how courageous and strong people are all around us. They can be brave by helping others, standing up for someone, or trying something hard.
  2. Scouts make a Medal of Honor to give to someone they know who is courageous and strong. Start with a clean paper plate.
  3. Decorate the medal however they like. Encourage them to use coloring supplies and get creative. They can look at examples of medals online for inspiration.
  4. An adult helps punch a hole at the top of the plate. An adult assist in cutting a long strip of ribbon with scissors.
  5. Scouts should thread the ribbon through the hole in the plate. An adult may need to assist making a knot. Tie the two ends together to make a knot.
  6. (Optional) Scouts share who they are giving their Medal of Honor to and why.
