Library Art Search

Activity Description: Scouts explore art books, choose a favorite piece, and reflect on the styles and materials used to inspire their own creativity.

Info Needed: Artists and designers use different materials (called mediums) to create all kinds of art. Makers may draw, paint, build, sculpt, or even create art on a computer. By exploring the styles and materials they use, we can better understand what creativity looks like around us, and how it can inspire our own art.

Items Needed:

  • Art books with lots of pictures (borrowed from the library or printed pages)
  • (Optional) blank paper
  • (Optional) pencils, crayons, or markers

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 10–30 min):

  1. Explore art books (5–7 min)
    • Scouts browse through art books individually or in small groups.
    • They notice different art styles, colors, and materials used.
  2. Find a favorite (3 min)
    • Each scout picks one piece of art they really like.
    • They prepare to share why they chose it.
  3. Describe and discuss (5–8 min)
    • Scouts take turns sharing their favorite art piece.
      • What do you see in this art?
      • What colors or materials do you think were used?
      • Does it look realistic or abstract?
  4. (Optional) Create inspired art (10–12 min)
    • Scouts draw their own picture inspired by the artwork they chose.
    • They can borrow a color, theme, or idea and make it their own.

Bonus Challenges:

  • Scouts compare two artworks in the books and describe how they are similar or different.
  • Scouts look for one of each: a painted design, a sculpture, and a patterned object
