The 1984 Daisy Girl Scout Leaders’ Guide recommends making applesauce with Daisy scouts.
First show a plate of applesauce, a plate with pieces of apples, and a plate with a full apple and ask for their observations. Talk to them about how they think the apple gets turned into apple sauce.
Use the following recipe to make Raw Applesauce – applesauce that isn’t cooked. This is adapted from the Leader’s Guide and not the direct recipe.
Ingredients:
- 3 apples
- water
- 2 TBPS brown sugar or honey
Supplies:
- Paring Knife
- Food Grinder OR Blender OR Bowl and Hand Masher
- Pitcher
- Cups and Spoons
- Cutting Board
Directions:
- Wash and pare apples.
- Cut apples into small pieces – peeling is optional but recommended
- Place pieces into food grinder or blender with a small amount of water OR place them into a bowl and use the hand masher.
- Once pieces are mashed to satisfaction, add sweetening and stir.
Taste and compare to store bought applesauce they would usually eat. Explain the difference between raw and cooked applesauce.
