Kids Can Protect

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Daisy Cybersecurity Basics badge requirements.

Info Needed for the badge requirements: Protecting means keeping something safe from harm or danger. We have things, like safety rules, to keep ourselves safe from harm. Computers also have things to keep them from harm. Computers store and use information for us, the users. Other users might want use our information that we keep private, or harm our information. Virus and Malware are things that can make a computer hurt and not work properly. To protect computers, there are:

  • Anti-virus software to keep the device safe from viruses and malware.
  • Guards or the user who can physically protect the device.
  • Software, called Firewalls, can protect communication between devices.

Items Needed:

  • Clear cup and a small creature (stuffed animal, figurine, or puff ball/cotton ball) for each scout or each small group of scouts
  • Box of random supplies that include paper, cardboard (old cereal boxes work well), lids, pipe cleaners, anything you have laying around the house that might be useful for the activity.
  • Scissors and tape for scouts or small groups to use.

Instructions:

  • If doing small groups of scouts, split into groups for this activity.
  • Take a small stuffed animal, figure, or even a puffball or cotton ball – call it a creature. Put the creature inside a clear cup. Each individual or small group has one creature in a cup.
  • Use the box of random supplies with tape and scissors available and challenge the scouts to protect their creature from the light while still letting the creature look around on all sides.
  • Scouts will use their creativity to use the materials and give the creature shade. Move the creature to another part of the room where the light changes a little. Did it still protect the creature?
