Improve a Prototype

Items Needed:

  • Craft materials for updating prototypes (cardboard, tape, glue, scissors, string, recycled items, etc.)
  • Original prototype, sketch, or idea
  • Feedback notes or completed Getting Feedback handout
  • (Optional) Use SCAMPER Method by GSUSA for ideas

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–25 minutes):

  1. Review Feedback (3–5 minutes)
    • Scouts look at the suggestions they received from others.
    • They think about what changes could help their idea work better.
  2. Improve the Prototype (10–12 minutes)
    • Scouts use craft materials to update their model or drawing.
    • Changes might include adding a new feature, fixing something that didn’t work, or trying a new layout.
  3. Show and Compare (5–6 minutes)
    • Scouts briefly show their updated prototype to a buddy or the group.
    • They explain one change they made and why they think it helped.
  4. Reflect (2–3 minutes)
    • Scouts share how it felt to improve their idea.
    • They talk about what part was fun, tricky, or surprising during the process.
