Fulfills Step 4 of GSUSA Cadette Netiquette badge requirements.
Items needed
- Pens or pencils
- Paper (enough for at least one per scout)
- Wi-Fi or cable-connected devices (laptops, tablets, or phones) for research purposes
Instructions
- Scouts create an imaginary social media profile using pen and paper to avoid creating misleading actual accounts. Scouts may use devices to find elements they would include in their profiles.
- Decide as a group which social media platform to use as a template. This activity focuses on Instagram, but adjust if needed.
- Pass out paper and pens or pencils to each scout. The activity is done individually, with access to internet-connected devices for research.
- Scouts choose a favorite book or movie character and imagine what their Instagram profile might look like:
- Create a unique Instagram name for the character.
- Find or imagine a profile picture that suits the character.
- Decide what the profile’s link would point to (e.g., a personal site, video, or song).
- Write a description the character might use, including text, emojis, or a quote.
- List accounts the character would follow.
- Brainstorm what types of pictures they would post and what their stories might include (e.g., videos, gifs).
- Come up with hashtags the character might use.
- Think about what they would avoid sharing and why.
- Determine how often they would use Instagram and why.
- Once profiles are complete, scouts share their character, profile picture, account name, description, and other details with the group.
