Activity Description: Scouts use a how-to guide to draw simple characters and explore their personal drawing style.
- Fulfills Step 3 of GSUSA Cadette Comic Artist badge requirements.
Info Needed: Build drawing skills by practicing character shapes, poses, and expressions through tracing, freehand sketching, or guided tutorials.
Items Needed:
- Pens or pencils
- Paper (plenty for each scout)
- How-To Guide from the internet or library, or a Circle Drawing how-to.
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15 min):
- Pass out pens, pencils, and paper. (2 min)
- Scouts may work individually or in small groups
- Choose a how-to guide for drawing characters. (3 min)
- Guides may focus on animals, people, or imaginative creatures
- (Optional) Use a guide that builds characters from circles and simple shapes
- Follow the guide to draw at least one character. (6 min)
- Characters don’t need to be placed in story scenes
- Focus on exploring how the character looks and feels
- Share drawings with the group. (4 min)
- Scouts discuss what was challenging and what they enjoyed about the process.
